Sweet Summer Cake smash | Northern nj family photography

I love when I get to come full circle with a family. I got to photograph this little man’s Maternity session before he was born, then his Newborn session, and then his first year cake smash.

I absolutely love to do these outdoor cake smash sessions. they are very low key. you just bring a little cake and let the baby have at it. I focus the first half of the session on getting some family photos, we usually will get a few posed photos and then a good mix of candid shots including the whole family. The focus in the beginning of the session is to capture your bond with your baby. This is a celebration for mom and dad as well. I know from experience that the first year of raising a baby is so difficult and it’s a big cause for celebration! I remember with both my boys, feeling a big sigh of relief once they hit one. It’s probably because my oldest was a preemie and I felt like once he was one he was so much heartier and healthier. Still a baby, but not as fragile.

about 15-20 minutes toward the end of the session, we will set up the blanket and cake and maybe some balloons if you brought balloons, and just let your little one have at it. we often get other family members involved as well, because sometimes it can be scary to have a cake all to yourself and not understand what to do with it.

the babies are often unsure in the beginning but as more time passes, they start to understand and we often can’t get the cake away from them.

This little cutie was really rather gentle about it and did not make too much of a mess, but the results were adorable nonetheless.
